Hundreds show up for Cedar Falls Blue Zones kickoff

Cedar Falls taking its turn to kick off the Blue Zones project.

Hundreds showed up at the Cedar Falls High School auditorium to hear from the men behind the initiative to help people live longer and healthier.

Dan Buettner and Dan Burden have studied parts of the world with the most 100-year-olds.

Now they are teaching these cultural attributes, like eating in moderation and moving more, to chosen communities.

"There's so many things that we can learn from all these other cultures. Just kind o flip-flopping the way we think of things, you know, we can come out so much better than we are," said Mary Smith of Cedar Falls.

Smith is working to get her church Blue Zones certified.

For example, studies show Blue Zones worldwide have people with close-knit families and friends--this adds eight years to life expectancy.
