Other states, countries notice Iowa's Powerball winning streak

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Wednesday night's Powerball jackpot has grown to a record half-billion dollars.

That means a single winner choosing the cash payout will take home $327 million before taxes.

Iowans in general have done pretty well in the Powerball this year.

The "Shipping 20" from the Quaker Oats plant in Cedar Rapids won $240 million in June. A couple from Bondurant won $201 million in October.  There have also been eight $1,000,000 prize winners sold in Iowa.

All of that means others are taking notice.

One Iowa Lottery spokesperson says the Iowa Lottery office has received more than a dozen emails from people in other states (and even other countries) wanting to know how they can buy Iowa Powerball tickets -- presumably in hopes of better luck at the top prize.

The Powerball lottery is open to 42 U.S. states, as well as Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to Powerball's website.  Customers must purchase Powerball tickets from authorized retailers in any of the Powerball states or territories.

National news outlets were also in Des Moines Tuesday, interviewing Iowa Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer.

There's only been one lottery jackpot higher than Wednesday night's drawing, the $656 million MegaMillions jackpot record set in March.
