Warding off holiday weight gain

Now that Thanksgiving is over, you might be feeling a little guilty about all the holiday treats you've eaten.

That feeling of being too full means fitness centers are extra busy, as people attempt to avoid packing on holiday pounds.

It's easy to overdo it on holiday foods. But don't sweat it yet. Even just a little time on the treadmill can help keep holiday pounds at bay.

"If you can get in 20 minutes of a good, hard workout, that'd be great," said Nilan Lansing with The W Sports & Wellness Center in Waverly. "But if you need to, just find time for 10 minutes -- 10 minutes a day. Just keep that routine and plan for times when you might not be able to work out one day, so you can get a longer workout in the next day."

The week after Thanksgiving rivals the days following New Year's for the number of people pouring into fitness centers in an effort to ward off holiday weight gain.

"You know you've fallen behind by eating all that extra pie and stuff," said Mark Lehmann of Waverly.

But Lehmann is doing the right thing. Since August, he's been working out with a personal trainer.

He's shed a few pounds and says he feels significantly better.

"I think it's just general health, just wanting to feel more healthy and better about yourself, and the energy level that I have -- all that stuff," said Lehmann.

That's the message the Blue Zones Project hopes to spread in the Cedar Valley, too.

Waterloo and Cedar Falls are both kicking off community efforts this week to help everyone find ways to improve health.

"We've got a committee that's working very hard with work sites to get people engaged at work, and you'll start to see it in schools," said Felicia Cass with Waterloo Blue Zones. "They're starting to come on board and make changes and engage families in thinking about how to have healthier lifestyles."

That includes things as simple as family meal time and walking more. The key, they say, is sticking with it to live both happier and healthier. 

Waterloo's Blue Zones kick-off event is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Cedar Falls' event is Wednesday at the Cedar Falls High School auditorium beginning at 5:30 p.m. 

Both are free and open to the public.

The Blue Zones Project is part of an initiative to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016.
