Holiday shoppers were out in record numbers

A survey released by the National Retail Federation says shoppers in the U.S. hit stores and websites in record numbers over the Holiday weekend.

According to the survey, 247 million people hit stores and websites over the four-day weekend, which started on Thanksgiving Day.  That's up 9.2 percent from last year's 226 million.

Shoppers also spent a record amount, spending $59.1 billion this year.  Last year, spending over the weekend totaled $52.4 billion.

The survey says the average shopper spent $423 this past weekend, up from $398 last year.
