Waverly business gears up for Small Business Saturday

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

More than 100 million people across the country participated in Small Business Saturday last year.

The movement to shop small and shop at local businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving started in 2010 when American Express offered incentives for consumers to shop locally.

Carrie Beenken is the owner of The Changing Season in Waverly.

She said she expects this year to have a good turnout.

"Hopefully we're busy all day long," she said.

Beenken used to be a buyer for a national retail chain, but has owned her shop on Main Street in Waverly for two years.

"I used to be much more excited for Black Friday and not so much for Small Business Saturday. The tables have really kind of turned for me," she said.

"Customers could easily choose to go to a big box store, but to remember us small businesses and keep us going it really means a lot," she said.

Beenken said now is her busiest time of year.

She has spent the past few weeks organizing displays and re-stocking shelves filled with a variety of unique home decor.

Beenken said Small Business Saturday is the perfect time to thank her customers. She said she'll be handing out a special gift for customers on Saturday, while supplies last.

She said it's the least she can do for the customers who keep her in business all year long.
