Holiday Hoopla kicks off in Cedar Falls

Anticipation was in the air Friday in downtown Cedar Falls.

"I think the kids just get excited about seeing Santa and getting ready for Christmas," said Cedar Falls resident Stephanie Mercado.

That excitement has been brewing for months among organizers.

"We start right away in January after last year's," said Holiday Hoopla board president Lee Ann Saul.

Holiday Hoopla brings thousands of people to Main Street throughout the season. But one person's arrival is definitely the highlight, and he knows how to make an entrance.

"The first year, he rappelled down one of our tall buildings. The second year he came by train. Last year, by helicopter," said Saul.

This year, Santa's workshop is outfitted with ten thousand lights -- synced with four different Christmas songs. All the other workshop staples are still here -- including the mailbox to the North Pole. It brings a certain whimsy to Main Street, and also brings an economic boost for the local shops.

Events like this are the reason many people choose to raise their families in the Cedar Valley.

"It's one of those quality of life events in your community. Everybody pulls together, everybody supports it, everybody talks about it and all that," said Saul.

"My brother is in town from Missouri and they love it down here. They always say -- Cedar Falls is a great place to be," Mercado added.
