Western Iowa crash kills one

A 26-year-old driver has been killed and her passenger injured after a crash with a deer.

Crews were called to U.S. Highway 34, west of Red Oak around 7:15 Wednesday night.

The Iowa State Patrol says Shawna Curtis was driving east with 9-year-old Lydia Powell when the SUV struck a deer that was crossing the roadway. The patrol says the deer was flipped up and came through the windshield, hitting Curtis. The SUV rolled into the ditch. Curtis was killed.

The girl was flown to a hospital for treatment.
