SCAM ALERT: Man targeting churches

Posted:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Police Department wants to warn the public about a scammer targeting churches.

The scammer is described as a 32-year-old male of Lebanese descent. He's 5'11" and has dark hair, goatee and glasses.

The scammer claims he has immediate family and close friends who were killed by an IED at the Syria-Lebanon border.

The scammer tells his victims that he needs money for a plane trip so he can attend the funeral, but officers say this man admitted to using the money to purchase drugs instead.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department reports that one area church has fallen victim to the scam and the man has approached several more in the area.

No arrests have been made, but Cedar Rapids police ask that you contact them if this man approaches you with this scam.
