Dubuque Community School District names Rheingans replacement

The Dubuque Community School District found somebody to take over the newly-promoted superintendent's former job.

Since his appointment to superintendent, Stan Rheingans has been pulling double duty in his former position as the district's executive director of human resources as well.

On Tuesday, the district announced it's filling Rheingans' former position with current Dubuque Senior High School principal Rick Colpitts.

Colpitts has been the principal there since the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, when he took over for retired principal Kim Swift. Before that, Colpitts served as an assistant principal at the high school. He was the principal at Union High School in LaPorte City prior to joining Dubuque's school district.

According to the district's director of school and community relations Mike Cyze, Colpitts will begin transitioning into the position next week. He'll start working full-time in the position by mid-January, pending approval by the district's board of education at its Nov. 27 meeting.

"As the executive director of human resources," Cyze said, "Colpitts will oversee all human resources operations for the almost 2,000 employees in the district. This includes district-wide planning and coordination of staff recruitment, the performance evaluation system, employee relations and personnel management."

The district will appoint an interim principal to Dubuque Senior High School for the remainder of this year and begin a search for a permanent replacement to begin during the 2013-2014 school year.

"I am very excited for the opportunities ahead," Colpitts said in a news release. "It is bittersweet to leave a school and staff that I love, but I look forward to working hand-in-hand with the employees across the district who make the great work of this district a reality."

In 2009, the School Administrators of Iowa named Colpitts the Assistant Principal of the Year in the State of Iowa. He also received the honor of State Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2001, according to the district.

Colpitts holds a bachelor's degree in business education from University of Northern Iowa, a master's degree in educational leadership from Drake University & a certificate of superintendency from UNI.
