Unemployment falling in Iowa

Fewer Iowans are unemployed, according to a new report from Iowa Workforce Development.

Just 5.1 percent of those in the state are without work, which is down from 5.8 percent a year ago.

Meanwhile, the U.S. unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.9 percent in October, but is still much lower than the year ago rate of nearly 9 percent.

"The Iowa job market looked a little stronger in October, as the state's unemployment rate continued to drop and hiring strengthened across most industry sectors," said Teresa Wahlert, director of Iowa Workforce Development. "Non-farm jobs advanced by 6,000 in October, the largest monthly gain since February."

The total number of working Iowans now sits at 1,555,800 in October, the first positive movement in the measure since April.
