Cyclocross race comes to Iowa City

Cycling fans in Iowa City were given an up close look at some of the sport's best athletes.

It's called cyclocross, a sport that originally became popular in Europe and is now picking up steam here in the states.

Athletes race for one hour through a two mile course full of obstacles.

This weekend's event in Iowa City is the largest cyclocross race in the U.S.

Race enthusiasts say it's a unique experience for the fans.

"Here they pass you lap after lap after lap going over crazy obstacles, and it's the same professional athletes you see in the Olympics," said John Meehan, executive race director.

The 2012 Carousel Volkswagen Jingle Cross Rock continues Sunday at the Johnson County Fairgrounds.

All proceeds raised from the event go to benefit the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
