Quilting club members sew for Lutheran World Relief

Twice a month, a group of ladies meet at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City to quilt.

Recently, the ladies completed 55 quilts with 43 of those set to be distributed worldwide through Lutheran World Relief, which ships the quilts around the world to those in need.

"They go all over the world. Africa, India, Pakistan, where ever they're needed," said Joyce Wood.

Joyce Wood joined the Do-Day Quilting Club at St. John's about a year ago when she retired. She said she loves quilting and she's happy to be able to make blankets for people in need around the world.

"It's just rewarding. Rewarding and knowing you're doing something that is a gift to someone else," she said.

Most of the fabric for the quilts is donated. When the ladies meet, the goal is to get two quilts finished.

"We just feel what we're doing is part of the ministry of showing God's love and compassion to help people," said Wood.

The Do-Day Quilters hope to make even more quilts in 2013 for Lutheran World Relief. LWR wants to send 500,000 quilts overseas next year.

If you'd like to help quilt, the ladies meet the second and fourth Thursdays at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City at 9 a.m.
