Gilbertville painted blue to support Don Bosco football

Thursday morning, the UNI Dome will be packed with high school football fans.  In eight-man action, two undefeated teams will face off:  Don Bosco of Gilbertville and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn.

Bosco's fans are painting their tiny town blue to show support for their hometown team.

Driving into Gilbertville, you'll find a row of blue and gold signs.  Outside many homes, businesses, and even on cars you'll find Don Bosco blue aplenty.  In the tiny town known for wrestling, folks are thrilled to see high school history made--as the Dons head into the state football championship game.

"Everybody's excited.  It's been talked about.  All the locals are coming out--people that have never been to a football game before are showing up.  The playoff games, each game the crowd's just gotten bigger and bigger.  It's just been fun," said Bosco fan Scott Becker.

Bosco's star quarterback Jake Hogan admits the pressure to win is immense.  But the community's support has been helping drive the team's success all the way to the state finals.

"It's kind of sweet to come into Gilbertville and see how many people are involved.  We've got this whole community behind us.  It's kind of indescribable," Hogan said.

Gilbertville will probably be a bit of a ghost town Thursday morning, as football fans pack the UNI Dome to support the Dons.  It'll be the conclusion of a stellar year for this football club, that just transitioned to eight-man and came together to build a brand new field in Gilbertville this year.

"We have a lot of people that put in a lot of time and effort, and I'd like to thank them.  All the Bosco football players would like the thank them.  It's just unbelievable what this community can do," said Hogan.

Win or lose, it's been a great ride for Don Bosco.  The good news--Jake Hogan's only a junior, so the future of this football club looks bright.

The Don Bosco game kicks off at 10:06 a.m.  Stay with KWWL and for the post-game highlights!
