Fire causes significant damage to Cedar Rapids garage


A two-stall detached garage is significantly damaged after a fire in Cedar Rapids.

It happened about 6:45 p.m. Friday in the 3800 block of Oakland Road Northeast.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department said 54-year-old Charles Peal was using a torch inside the garage to repair a car.That's when a spark from the torch ignited the backseat of the vehicle.

Peal got out of the garage safely.

Firefighters contained the fire to the garage, but the car, which is owned by a friend of Peal's, was destroyed along. Tools and lawn equipment inside the garage were also lost.
