CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -
Tripoli successfully began defense of its Class 1A crown with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-21 victory over LeMars Gehlen Catholic Thursday night. The four-time defending 1A champs received 13 kills and seven digs from Bailey Kirchhoff while Ashlen Damm added seven.
The victory was the 13th-straight state win for the Panthers, whose last state tournament loss was to eventual 1A champion Wapsie Valley in the first round of the 2007 state tournament.
Morgan Whitehead had five kills to lead Gehlen Catholic, who ends their season at 21-11. This marks the third-straight year that the Jays have been defeated by Tripoli in the state tournament.
Tripoli (36-5) faces Marquette Catholic or Holy Trinity Catholic in the 1A semifinals Friday at 7:00 p.m. on Court Two.
