5A State Volleyball Dubuque Hempstead falls to Bettendorf 3-2

Bettendorf's Caitlin Wernentin, Danielle Pennington and Anna Wiley combined for 45 of Bettendorf's 54 kills as the seventh-ranked Bulldogs upset No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead in five sets, 24-26, 31-29, 17-25, 25-21, 16-14 in Class 5A first round action at the Iowa Girls State Volleyball Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

Wernentin had 16 kills to lead Bettendorf while Pennington added 15 kills and Anna Wiley had 14 kills and nine block assists.

Dubuque Hempstead's Audrey Reeg had 30 kills with three service aces and 18 digs.

Bettendorf (21-11) will face Urbandale or Pleasant Valley at noon Friday on Court 2. Dubuque Hempstead ends its year at 29-7.

The Hawkeyes, representing team USA at the World University Games, got a pair of 3-run home runs out of Robert Neustrom to clinch the victory.

    The Missouri Valley Conference exercised an option to keep the men's basketball tournament in Saint Louis through at least 2020. The previous agreement ended in 2018 with a two year to remain at the Scottrade Center. The tournament, known as Arch Madness, will conduct it's 30th straight tournament in Saint Louis in 2020.
