CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A third wave of Alliant Energy crews is arriving in New York to help with recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy.

Justin Foss, Alliant Energy spokesman, says 205 Alliant Energy workers from Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota have been sent to the East Coast for Hurricane Sandy relief since Oct. 28.

The latest group, which is comprised of 63 workers, will be working on the natural gas system around West Hempstead, N.Y.  The group includes 28 workers from Wisconsin, 34 from Iowa, and one from Minnesota.

"We're proud of our staff that headed east. To date, our crews have been very safe while working in extreme conditions and mountainous terrain," said Vern Gebhart, Vice President - Energy Delivery Operations, in a written statement. "The reason we're able to give such a large response is because our staff back home have really stepped up and provided great support."

Alliant Energy crews, which have logged more than 19,500 hours on the East Coast, have helped restore power to customers in the Lake Katrine, New York and Yorktown Heights, New York areas.

The Department of Energy estimates 67,000 utility workers from 80 different companies are helping the East Coast recover from Hurricane Sandy. Power has been restored to more than 7.3 million customers.
