DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
John Kerrigan, former Loras College president, died Monday in Dallas, Texas at the age of 76.
Kerrigan received his Ph. D. from Loras in 1957 and became their 25th president in 2002. He served in that role until 2004.
Before coming to Loras in 2002, Kerrigan was the chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh for ten years. He then agreed to serve at Loras so that a long-term president could be found.
"John came to Loras at one of the institution's most difficult moments. He came roaring in and was in charge immediately. One year after he came, students filled the chapel for Sunday Mass for the first time in decades," said former Loras Chair of the Board of Regents, Kevin Malone, in a written statement.
Kerrigan became a nationally recognized expert in public administration and an academic consultant to universities, educational associations and government agencies.
"Today, thousands of people lost a great leader, dear friend, man of faith and tremendous servant. The entire Loras community extends its deepest sympathy and prayers to Pat, their four children and ten grandchildren. All of us at Loras mourn John's death and offer gratitude for his great service to Loras," said Loras College President Jim Collins in a written statement.
Funeral services are planned for 1:00 p.m. on Nov. 17, at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 830 S. Westhaven Drive in Oshkosh, Wis.
