WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Several incumbent Democratic and Republican state Senators and Representatives lost their bids to continue to represent their districts while others survived close races.

In District 56, Patti Ruff upset incumbent Republican Bob Hager.

In District 59, incumbent Democrat Bob Kressig fought off a challenge from Republican challenger Jim Kenyon.

"You have to listen to both sides and pay attention to their real issues and concerns. I've done that. When it comes to education, UNI, those are key issues I'm focused on since I've been in office and will continue to do that," Kressig said of representing such an evenly split district.

In District 66, Art Staed unseated incumbent Republican Renee Schulte.  In District 68, Daniel Lundby unseated incumbent Republican Nick Wagner.
