Iowa City police are investigating reports of two attempted burglaries and a sexual assault that may be connected.
Officers were called to a home in the Wetherby Neighborhood on the southeast side of the city around 12:14 a.m Sunday for a report of a burglary in progress. While on their way, officers learned that a person in the home woke up and chased the suspect out of the home. When the victim chased the suspect and tried to catch him, the suspect threatened to shoot the victim.
About 90 minutes later, officers were called to another home in the same area for a report of a burglary. The victim reported that someone broke into the home and began stealing items. While in the home, police say the suspect tried to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl at gunpoint until an adult returned home, causing the suspect to run from the home.
Police say they aren't sure if the two crimes are connected, but evidence suggests they are.
While searching for the suspect, officers learned that a man who goes by the street name of "Freaky Tone" had been hanging around the neighborhood for the past couple of days asking people where and when they go to work.
The suspect is described as a black male having a light to medium complexion, 5'5" - 5'8", medium build, approximately 20 years old, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt with red sleeves, blue jeans, and gray/black "Polo" shoes.
Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous and encourage the public not to confront him.
