Donna O'Brien of Waterloo has always loved to bake, but she never planned to run a business out of her home. Things changed after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2008.
"Of course it's devastating. You're crushed and it's unbelievable. I have no family history or anything like that," said Donna O'Brien.
Donna went through five months of chemotherapy, 35 rounds of radiation and a total of 11 surgeries. It was a life altering experience.
"After breast cancer, I always tell everyone through crisis comes opportunities," she said.
Donna's opportunity came in the form of a cookie.
With the help of her niece, Donna developed a recipe for the Bambino -- a sweet and fluffy cookie. She started selling the cookies with a portion of the proceeds going to the Beyond Pink TEAM, a local, all volunteer breast cancer organization.
"The Beyond Pink Team is an incredible organization. I can't say enough good things about them. Doing everything it can for women who don't have support," said O'Brien.
"A number of women have holes in insurance or no insurance and their job doesn't allow them to wear a port. They need help with gas money, groceries, utility bills, whatever it is," said DJ Corson with the Beyond Pink TEAM.
Donna O'Brien said she was one of the lucky ones with lots of support and selling the cookies for the Beyond Pink TEAM is her way of helping someone else who may not be so lucky.
"She is just one of the treasures who understands paying it forward," said Corson.
Donna said after her own experience, baking for breast cancer is the right thing to do. Every dollar raised helps a woman who needs as much support as she can get.
In just about eight months, Donna's already raised around $1000 for the Beyond Pink TEAM.
