WATERLOO (KWWL) -

One of Iowa's greatest sports figures will get a day to call his own.  Governor Terry Branstad was in Waterloo Thursday to declare October 25th, Dan Gable Day.

In high school, Gable won three state titles at Waterloo West High School.  He then went on to win two NCAA titles at Iowa State University while only losing one match in his college career.

Gable also competed in the 1972 Munich Olympics and won a gold medal without surrendering a point.

As a coach at the University of Iowa, Gable led the Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA championships and 21 consecutive big 10 titles.

October 25, 2012 is also Dan Gable's 64th birthday.

A reception was held at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame/Dan Gable Museum in downtown Waterloo.
