Hundreds line up in Waterloo for winter clothing give-away
WATERLOO (KWWL) -
A group of volunteers in Waterloo is ensuring hundreds of their neighbors will have warm clothes and blankets for the winter season.
A line of people gathered in front of Sacred Heart School Saturday for an annual fall clothing give-away. The event is sponsored by the Church Row Neighborhood Coalition, with help from other area congregations.
Each person is given a bag, and allowed to take whatever clothing and bedding they need for their family. Organizers say it's heartwarming to know every single item is appreciated.
"That's the best part -- when someone comes up and says we appreciate what you've done. We've had people lose their clothes in floods and fires. When they go out with the stuff they need it really makes us feel good. It's why we do it. If people didn't need it we wouldn't be here," said Jim Bowes of the Church Row Neighborhood Coalition.
A similar event is held at Sacred Heart School in the spring. Any clothing left over from this year's give-away will be donated to a local non-profit organization.
