DCI investigates a shooting involving a deputy

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the death of a man shot by a deputy in southeast Iowa.

An agency spokesman says the man shot and killed was 59-year-old Robert Dooley, of Brighton. Authorities say Dooley was walking along Iowa Highway 2 near Cantril Tuesday. Witness had called authorities saying there was a man in military uniform with a rifle and making obscene gestures.

Investigators say Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies ordered Dooley to drop the rifle. They say Dooley pointed the rifle toward deputies, that's when Deputy Jon Tharp fired a shot killing Dooley.

Tharp is place on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
