Each Wednesday, Max Ortner distributes communion at six nursing homes and care facilities in Waterloo and Cedar Falls.
After being asked by his priest, Max started distributing communion 32 years ago. He's visited people at Ravenwood Nursing Home and Rehab Center for 21 years.
"We're born to die and only heaven or hell afterwards, and we all want to be with Jesus in heaven forever," said Max Ortner.
During three decades, Max Ortner said he's distributed communion at least 75,000 times.
"I have known Max from working at Ravenwood and other facilities, I'm blessed he comes here and does what he does," said Carmen Wollum with Ravenwood Nursing Home and Rehab Center.
Max Ortner takes communion to 60 people each Wednesday. He starts around 8:30 in the morning and finishes around 3:30 in the afternoon. God willing, he'll keep going.
"Well, I got 32 years in and I think if I can go eight more years, I'll retire and get my 40 years in. I'll be 85. I'll be an old man then," said Ortner.
The 78-year-old says faith has kept him going, and he hopes his weekly communion helps others keep their faith as well.
