Fate of Iowa Braille School in hands of Iowa Board of Regents

VINTON (KWWL) -

The future for the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton is in jeopardy.

The school is in danger of closing its doors for good because the Iowa Board of Regents is considering plans to create five regional centers that would serve both the blind and visually impaired as well as people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Don Boddicker is the school's current business operations manager.

He said the worst scenario is a closure of the Vinton facility.

"But what we're lobbying for is to be picked as one of the regional centers in the state," Boddicker said.

Should the Iowa Board of Regents deem the historical facility as appropriate for both the blind and deaf, and choose to proceed with the creation of five regional centers in the state, some adjustments would be made to the current facility.

"There would have to end up being some modification, strobe lights and what have you, that would accommodate the deaf and hard of hearing," said Boddicker.

Boddicker said there are multiple services in place to assist those who are blind or visually impaired.

Currently, the facility is used on weekends and in the summer to help those who are blind or visually impaired. The campus has classrooms, a library and enough dormitories to house 26 residential students and help them learn life skills.

A public hearing on the regional disability service centers is planned for Monday, October 22nd. It will be held at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton at 5:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and share comments as the Iowa Board of Regents and the Feasibility and Planning Study Committee while the groups continue to work toward creating effective and efficient services for Iowans who are deaf, blind, visually impaired and/or hard of hearing.
