CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 3-1 Tuesday night in the McLeod Center.

Senior Krista DeGeest earned her 1,000th kill in her Panther career tonight.
Macy Ubben led the way for the Panthers with 15 kills and three service aces and Amy Braun followed with 14 kills. Molly Turk recorded a career high 58 assists for the Panthers and Candice Burke notched 31 digs for UNI.

UNI took command of the first set early on. At the first timeout of the set, UNI had the 8-2 lead over South Dakota State. The Panthers continued this dominance throughout the rest of the set and took the 25-13 win.

UNI and South Dakota State went back and forth through the majority of the second set. The score was tied eleven separate times in the set. With the score tied the final time at 17-17, a kill by Macy Ubben gave the Panthers the 18-17 lead and helped them go on a 4-0 run to make it 21-17. The Jackrabbits took advantage of an attack error in the next play to make it 21-18, but it wasn't enough to catch UNI. The Panthers won the set 25-19.

The third set started off similar to the second. South Dakota State had the 15-12 lead, but UNI took advantage of a SDSU service error in the next play and went on a 3-1 run to tie it up at 16-16.  The score was tied up several more times in the set, and the teams eventually sat at 21-21. A kill by Sydney Howard of SDSU in the next play helped them go a 3-0 run to make it 24-21 Jackrabbits. UNI could not come back and SDSU won the set 25-22.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the fourth set, three straight kills by DeGeest helped the Panthers go on a 5-0 run to give them the 10-5 lead. DeGeest earned her 1,000th kill in this match and gave UNI the 12-7 lead at that point. The Panthers kept up this spark and cruised through the rest of the set. UNI won the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.

The Panthers will host Evansville on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
