Winter flea and tick prevention also important for pets

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Pet owners usually think of flea and tick control in the summer months, but veterinarians are saying that people should protect their pets year round.

"The fleas and ticks don't take the winter off, and so we can't afford to take the winter off from flea and tick control," says Dr. Susan Little, a veterinarian from Oklahoma State University.

Little explains that while the immature ticks that pass on Lyme Disease to humans are active in the summer, the adult ticks are active between October and March and can pass the disease on to your pets.

Experts say pets should be treated with flea and tick prevention products once every 30 days.
