Crime Stoppers makes arrest from Facebook tips

Facebook is a popular online spot to connect with friends and family.  But now, it's also becoming a useful tool to solve local crimes.  In fact Monday, Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers is announcing two more arrests, made possible by Facebook tips.

Pictures, surveillance videos, and information about crimes in Black Hawk County are generating a lot of buzz online.  Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers just put up its Facebook page last month and already has over 300 "likes".

"A couple weeks ago, we posted several different cases, and within about five or six hours, we had four out of five people identified, and two cases we solved that, quite honestly, I don't think we could've solved without the public's help," said Detective Brice Lippert, Waterloo Police Crime Stoppers Liaison.

Along with a toll-free phone number, the online platform gives you another anonymous way to help police solve crimes.  The recent Facebook success has Crime Stoppers hoping word will spread, encouraging others to come forward.  Even small details could help lead to an arrest and cash reward for tipsters.

"Just because we may not be asking for specific information about a crime, doesn't mean we're not interested.  We take all sorts of tips on all sorts of crimes.  And once Crime Stoppers gets that information, whether it's Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County or Evansdale, they will hand that information off to the right place.  So we're just asking if you have information, then give them a call," Lippert said.

To help generate even more tips, Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers cards are being handed out to every inmate discharged from the Black Hawk County Jail.

With any luck that will draw more eyes to the information so someone just might help solve even the most difficult cold cases.

Anyone can call in anonymous tips to Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers 24/7.  Tips leading to an arrest could be eligible for a cash reward.  The number to call is 855-300-TIPS. Click here to see the Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers Facebook page.
