Independence Jr/Sr High School construction open to tours

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -

Construction started on the new junior-senior high school in Independence during the spring but Sunday, people were invited to tour the progress that had been made since construction started.

About 100 people toured the building to see how rooms were laid out. In addition to being about 50% larger than the old building at 180,000 square feet, the new building also includes an auditorium and a FEMA safe room for severe weather. The building will house grades 7-12.

The new building was made possible when in 2011 the school was approved for $12.5 million general obligation bond.

As construction and weather allow, the school board is expecting to be able to allow community members to tour the building as progress continues once a month until complete. Construction is expected to be completed in time for the 2013-2014 academic year. The school board is unsure on what will be done with the current building.
