St. Luke's holds NICU family reunion

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Since 1977, St. Luke's Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has helped thousands of babies of babies survive.

On Saturday, St. Luke's hosted its annual NICU family reunion.

"The nurses and hospital staff were very good to us," said Bridget Welton of Cedar Rapids. Welton and her son, Noah, spent more than one month in St. Luke's NICU.

"You get pretty attached to all the doctors and nurses," she said. "It's nice to come back and reconnect with everybody."

Saturday's reunion was just as much fun for hospital staff as it was for former NICU families.

"You know how sick a baby was or small they might have been, and then you see them two or three years later and you see all the milestones they've made," said Family Support Liaison at St. Luke's Karla Pisarik.

"And then you see what they've overcome and how things have just changed dramatically since when they were in the hospital," Pisarik added.

St. Luke's NICU is Cedar Rapids' only Level Two Regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
