The KWWL Game of the Week, chosen by a near record number of votes, was a great matchup in 3A District 6 between fifth ranked Boone and South Tama. Both teams entered the night unbeaten in district play, so it was a defacto showdown for the district championship.
It was also a chance for the South Tama team to bring a moment of celebration to what has been an incredibly difficult week for the school district.
Cross country runner and 8th grader, 13-year-old Ian McFate, was hit by a car on Monday during a practice run. He died on Tuesday.
Ian's parents, Mark and Christine McFate, are deeply involved in the community. Mark is on the South Tama school board and Christine is a vocal music teacher at South Tama.
The Trojans pulled their helmet stickers and wore solid black to honor the memory of Ian.
"Before the game, we all talked about taking the stickers off our helmets and that's why we're wearing completely black helmets is in memory of Ian McFate. We've got guys with 'RIP Ian' and 'Ian McFate.' This is a tribute to him. He was a great kid, and everyone really liked him, so this is a tribute to him. Definitely," South Tama quarterback Sam Kuhter said.
After a big red zone stop, Kyle Stepheson took it coast to coast 95 yards making it 7 nothing Trojans.
And they'd later repeat it. Sam Kuhter on the quarterback keeper, from the 15 and he goes 85 yards.
Boone finally found the board on their third trip to the red zone.
But South Tama's Kuhter wasn't done, going 20 yards for the score, making it 20 to 7 Trojans.
During the second half, Boone tries to make the game as Johnny Mack scored from the 2, they'd pull within 13 after 3.
In the end, South Tama takes down #5 Boone 37 to 14.
"We think that we're this good, but you know, you've got to prove it, and we beat a good team tonight, and hopefully this gives us a good seed in the playoffs. It guarantees we're in there obviously, and we want to go deep," South Tama Head Coach Jay Hoskey said.
