Van Horne woman displaced by fire, says things could be worse

More than five departments spent hours working to contain a massive fire in Van Horne on Wednesday.

The building on Main Street, which included Long Shots Bar and Grill and an apartment unit, has been charred and bulldozed into a pile of rubble.

Tammy Meskinen had rented the apartment unit since April. Now, she's living with friends.

"I got the important stuff," she said.

Meskinen lost a previous home in 1992 due to a house fire.

She said things could have been worse.

Meskinen expressed gratitude to the Van Horne Fire Department. She said firefighters went back inside her apartment before the building was bulldozed to salvage as many valuables as they could.

"The firefighters went in and started dragging stuff out," she said.

One of the items was her grandma's blue bowl. Meskinen said she used to make homemade bread in the bowl and would have been devastated had it been lost in the rubble.

"When my grandma passed away, that's all I wanted. My grandpa thought I was nuts because I didn't want the silver. I wanted the big blue, cracked bowl."

Meskinen said the firefighters saved her most treasured item.

"I can buy jeans and shoes, but I've got the important stuff," she said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
