Thomson prison is sold to the federal government

The federal government has finally gotten the green light to use a state-of-the art prison that has stood empty for more than a decade.

The Thomson Correctional Facility, located in Thomson, just south of Savana, has been empty since it was built in 2001.

The 1,600 bed, maximum-security facility has never been used because there have never been enough funds to pay for the operations.

Finally, the Department of Justice approved a $165-million request for the federal government to acquire the empty prison.

State officials say this will create more than a thousand jobs, and federal officials say it will ease overcrowding.

Governor Pat Quinn says money from the sale of the Thomson Correctional Center should be used to pay off the prison's bond debt and the state's stack of unpaid bills.
