Number of building permits up in most of Iowa

Paul Brundell is President of Allan Custom Homes and part of the Greater Cedar Rapids Area Home Builders Association.

He was glad to hear that the number of residential building permits issued in Iowa in August was up 25% over last year.

"Anytime we see improvements and stabilization in that market that's good news for many individuals," said Brundell.

According to the United States Census Bureau, more than 6,000 new building permits have been authorized in the state this year.

There's two areas of Iowa that saw less building permits in the first half of this year than they did the same time last year, Ames and Cedar Rapids. But in the case the Cedar Rapids, it's largely due to the fact that many of the flood recovery projects are done.

"Is it disappointing? Certainly you always want to see numbers that are reaching upwards," said Brundell.

He feels a local trend has been to remodel a current home, instead of building a new one.

"A lot of that's being driven by the uncertainty that they've seen in the past four or five years in what their home might sell for and what equity might exist in the home," said Brundell.

He says if there's less uncertainty, people will be more willing to make life's big decisions.
