UPDATE: 13-year-old dies after hit by car near Tama

A 13-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car Monday afternoon near Tama.

The Iowa State Patrol says 30-year-old Timothy Nunnikhoven was driving west on E49 at around 4:50 p.m. when he hit a runner, 13-year-old Ian McFate, who was crossing E49.

Authorities say McFate was running on a trail that crossed the road.

McFate was flown to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where he passed away Tuesday afternoon.
The accident remains under investigation.
