VP candidate Ryan campaigns in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Paul Ryan spoke to about 1000 people inside the Loras College Fieldhouse and several hundred more outside the building.

He told them the key to a Republican return to the White House is Iowa.

Jodi Stevens is one of the undecided voters.

She liked what she heard from Ryan Monday night.

"I liked what he said tonight so I keep teeter-tottering going back and forth," said Stevens.

Those are the people the Romney/Ryan campaign need to win swing state Iowa.

He told us why before the event.

"We can grow this economy a whole lot faster than it's been growing. The reason we're not having good economic growth is because the president's economic policies have failed. He controlled all of the government the first two years, put his agenda in place. As a result, we have a stagnant economy, too many people out of work, too many people slipping behind and we can fix that," said Ryan.

The economy is the number one theme and it struck a cord with some.

"We have to make hard choices. We need austerity in this country that's going to hurt everybody to correct the critical problems that we have," said Dan Hall of Scales Mound, Illinois.

Ryan will continue a two day bus tour along the Mississippi River Tuesday.

He'll stop in Clinton, Muscatine and Burlington Tuesday.
