Indee selected as Iowa site in farm to school initiative
INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -
The Independence Community School District's nutrition program was selected as the Iowa site in a multi-state, USDA funded project to increase consumer awareness of "Farm to School" programs. The project is jointly administered by researchers and extension specialists at Pennsylvania State University, Iowa State University, and Delaware State University.
The multi-disciplinary project will involve the district's nutrition staff, led by Jessica Weber,small and medium size farmers currently participating in the districts "Farm to School" program and those interested in doing so, along with other members of the school and district communities. As a result of the three-year project, it is hoped there will be better understanding of farm to school programs by producers, school staff, students and parents in better understanding farm to school programs.
Independence Community Schools were selected in part because of its established farm to school initiative; past recognition includes visits by top ranking USDA officials and featured on the USDA "Farm to School" website (http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/F2S/Default.htm).
