Ely man arrested after sexual assault investigation

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids police arrested an Ely man after an investigation into the sexual abuse of a 17-year-old girl they say happened on Sept. 16.

Sgt. Cristy Hamblin says the victim told her parents that she was sexually abused by 38-year-old Scott Wennermark, a family friend.

The parents reported it to the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Wennermark was arrested on Sept. 20. He is charged with third degree sexual abuse. If convicted, Wennermark could face up to 10 years in prison.

The victim was taken to the St. Luke's Child Protection Center where she received a medical examination and referrals for counseling.

Hamblin says the adult victims of sexual assaults are examined at either St. Luke's Hospital or Mercy Medical Center by specially trained Sexual Assault Nurses Examiners. All victims are also offered services provided by Waypoint Services.
