IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An Iowa City man faces charges after police say he grabbed a shotgun, loaded it and then pointed it at his girlfriend and others in the room.

Officers were called to 3032 Wayne Avenue in Iowa City at around 5:29 a.m. Sunday for a report of a fight.

When they arrived, the girlfriend and other witnesses said that 25-year-old Athan Lee Cress got into a fight with his girlfriend and threw her into the wall several times before grabbing a shotgun, loading it and pointing it at them.

Police say Cress had left the house before they arrived, but once officers found him a few blocks away, he said that he did it to scare them and didn't know the gun was loaded.

Cress is charged with domestic abuse and two counts of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon.
