School bus crash in Hiawatha injures 6 students

Six students from the Independence Community School District were taken to area hospitals after their school bus was involved in a crash with a SUV in Hiawatha Saturday afternoon.  

The crash happened around 4:15 p.m. at E. Boyson Rd. and Terry Ave.  

Hiawatha Police say 33 students and 3 adults were on the bus at the time.  Police say charges are pending against the driver of the SUV for failure to yield half the roadway.  

The students suffered minor injuries. Police say the bus received $10,000 worth of damage and the SUV sustained $15,000 worth of damage.  

Boyson Rd. was closed for 90 minutes while the intersection was cleared.
