Man will spend just weeks in prison after attacking police officer

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A former University of Iowa student once faced a charge of attempted murder for his attack on an Iowa City police officer, but now faces much less time in jail after a plea deal.

Branden Plummer attacked and choked Sergeant Brian Krei in November 2011 after the officer tried to stop him for disrupting traffic.

Plummer appeared in court Friday, admitting to a judge that he did choke Sergeant Krei. Prosecutors say Plummer choked Krei and slammed his head into the concrete.

Plummer has already spent 30 days in jail, and will likely not spend more than another 30 days behind bars.

As part of the deal- Plummer plead guilty to willful injury, a class D felony.  He also pleaded guilty to interference with official acts causing bodily injury- an aggravated misdemeanor.

Sgt. Krei and other members of the Iowa City Police Department were also in court Friday.

"I think this has been a very trying ordeal for Brian and his family. I think they were looking forward to the resolution and ready to be moving on with their lives," said Lt. Doug Hart.

Plummer's sentencing is set for November 2.  A judge will deliver either a deferred or suspended sentence.
