Oelwein police say alleged attacks are just rumors

The Oelwein Police Department has been receiving comments of concerns over the rumors that there have been two separate incidents of elderly females that have been assaulted within the community. One incident allegedly occurred at or near the via-duct in Oelwein. The Oelwein Police Department has not received any reports of an assault in this area.

The second incident allegedly involved forced entry into the residence of an elderly female and that the female was assaulted. The Oelwein Police Department responded to concerns that an incident of this nature "may" have occurred. However, upon investigation, officers and medical staff found no evidence, at this time, to verify the report. Presently, the evidence nor the alleged victim are able to confirm that a crime was attempted or committed.

"The Oelwein Police Department takes reports of this nature very seriously. If there was evidence to support the allegations, the public would have been notified. However, we have to walk the fine line of public notification for cause and public panic over speculation" stated Chief Jeremy Logan.

Chief Logan also states, "We understand that in situations like this people often jump to conclusions based on disgruntlement over a past speeding citation or run-in with law enforcement and not based on facts. Fortunately for the community, our officers are focusing on the facts and evidence and will make their formal interpretation as the information is processed."
