Krista DeGeest energizes Panthers

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The game of volleyball has been well known for being one of high energy and celebrations, but even for the Midwest powerhouse, UNI Panthers, Krista DeGeest stands tall in the energy department.

"Volleyball is such an emotional sport, and to be able to have the energy and the spirit really gives your team motivation to be able to go to the next point and keep a rally going. And to be able to look at our teammates and just cheer together, it just brings us all together, and we're ready for the next point," DeGeest says.

UNI assistant coach Kalani Mahi adds, "It's basically a game of momentum, and when you get the momentum going with not only your plays on the court, but the energy with the crowd; that creates point opportunities for you."

DeGeest has two All-Conference nods, and an honorable mention All-American pick to her credit, but she feels that her leadership has become her strongest suit, above all else.

"She's one of our players that gets along with anybody, and that's very important for the success of the team," Mahi says.

"To be able to be a role model, and be somebody to come to if they're struggling with either sport or academics, or just life in general; that's just something that, I try to be there for them," DeGeest adds.

And the Spencer, Iowa native hopes that her impact in the McLeod Center will be evident in future generations.

"We're one big family here at UNI, and there are going to be people that I'm going to come back and stay in touch with once I leave, and be able to come back and cheer them on as they take on the future years," DeGeest said.
