WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Dozens of veterans from Iowa spent Tuesday touring Washington DC.  Both the Waterloo Honor Flight and Eastern Iowa Honor Flight chapters sent groups to the nation's capitol to visit the monuments built in their honor.

A steady rain failed to dampen the spirits of the groups.  They enjoyed visiting the WWII Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and Iwo Jima Memorial.

It was a unique day for those traveling with Waterloo's Honor Flight.  For the first time, Korean War Veterans were accompanying those who served in World War II.  92 veterans made Tuesday's trip from Waterloo, including 53 World War II veterans and 39 Korean veterans.

Nikki Newbrough was traveling with the veterans from Waterloo, documenting their experience. She will have an overview of their trip on Today in Iowa on Wednesday.

The Honor Flights return home Tuesday night, with hundreds of people gathering at airports in both Waterloo and Cedar Rapids for the homecoming celebrations.  If you're interested in welcoming them home, you're invited to Waterloo Regional Airport at 9:30 or the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids at 10:00.
