AMES (KWWL) -

Iowa State University officially has a new president.

Friday morning Steven Leath became ISU's 15th president.

Leath got down to business right away, talking about his goals and priorities for the school.

Most of his plans focus on finances.

First he pledged to raise $150 million in private gifts for student financial aid in the next five years.

"One of the issues that captured my attention even before I arrived at Iowa State getting was the student indebtedness issue. And here in Iowa we have one of the largest average student debt loads in the nation.  And folks we're better than that," said Leath.

Leath also pledged to support the plan proposed by the Board of Regents this week to freeze the undergraduate tuition rate for Iowans next year.
