Volunteers get their feet wet in Cedar River clean-up effort

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar River is a bit cleaner.

The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department along with other local departments and volunteers completed a river cleanup project Wednesday in the Cedar River.

The clean-up crew removed everything from large pieces of wood and metal and even tires.

The low water level was an advantage.

This is the first opportunity to remove debris that dates back to the 2008 flood.

"We met here in the morning and we used boats and a tow truck and volunteers to clean out either man-made debris or the large trees you see in the background. It was very successful and no one was hurt. It went well," said Daniel Gibbins, with the CR Parks and Recreation Department.

The department will complete several other river cleanup projects throughout the year.
