Cedar Rapids educator named Iowa Teacher of the Year

A Cedar Rapids educator received the state's top teaching honor this afternoon.

Governor Branstad named Tania Johnson the 2013 Iowa Teacher of the Year.

The Cedar Rapids native has spent more than 20 years teaching kindergarten at Jackson and Coolidge Elementary Schools.

"As a voice for the teachers I'm hoping that that will allow me to go out and talk to teachers, hear what their concerns are, and also just to tell them what a great job they're doing and remind them that they need to tell other people about the wonderful things that are happening in their classrooms," said Johnson.

Johnson will begin her role as Teacher of the Year in January.
