IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
Some Iowa grannies spent Grandparents Day encouraging others to go green.
100 Grannies for a Livable Future held a Ban the Bags rally on the Iowa City Ped Mall.
Their goal is to get the city to ban plastic bags.
As shoppers walked by, the group would trade a reusable bag for a shopper's plastic one.
"It's not an impossible thing; people used to live without plastic," said Becky Ross, Event Chair. "We just want to inform people and we're trying to get the city to ban the plastic bags."
The group used the plastic bags they collected to make a chain, showing how much waste goes into landfills when the bags aren't recycled.
