One of the Iowa National Guard's units, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division ("Red Bulls"), is receiving recognition.
This was the largest single deployment of Iowa troops since World War II.
The Red Bulls were awarded the Department of Defense's prestigious "Citizen Patriot United Award" two days ago at Fort Myer, Virginia.
The director of the Army National Guard said the Red Bulls made substantial contributions to the security and defense of the nation in Afghanistan.
Four Iowans were killed during their deployment: Specialist Donnie Nichols of Shell Rock, Sergeant First Class Terryl Pasker of Cedar Rapids, Sergeant Brent Maher of Honey Creek, and Staff Sergeant James Justice of Grimes.
